Hawally Kitsch

Brief

This bite sized workshop is intended as an indirect follow up to Hawally Bound with a focus on AlOthman Center in Hawally. The center’s unique architectural style and elements are hard to find in other structures in Kuwait. Designed by Polish architect Wojciech Jarząbek, often refereed to as the king of Kitsch Architecture.

The workshop aims to shed light on this unique architectural style by taking AlOthman Center as a case study to be observed and documented through block printing.

Outcome

Participants observed the building’s unique architecture during a guided tour, from which they documented their findings and highlighted their favorite architectural elements. The workshop concluded with each participant creating a block printed collage on gridded textile of the elements extracted from the building.
